So while listening to the song I posted before this joint, I came across this track by J. Cole. I was hoping it was something from the more introspective J. Cole rather than the commercial side. Low and behold, I got exactly what I was hoping for. The song addresses two different situations, but both are very relevant. The 1st being interracial dating and the 2nd, yup you guessed it…politics!!! I often think it’s interesting to hear most “celebrities” talk about politics for various reasons I won’t delve into. But what’s more interesting to me is when rappers talk about politics, and it’s not the generic “you should go and vote for ‘fill in the blank’ because I’m a popular rapper and that’s pretty much it”. So it was refreshing to hear something dealing with the realm of politics, but different from the usual.
I’m certain that some will just view this as any other song by J. Cole, and just brush it off. Or they will just bunch it into the category of it’s not what’s hot or it’s not on the radio or dare I say it, it’s too complicated because it isn’t simplistic or materialistic like a lot of other music that gets recognized by the masses. And if that’s the case then so be it, but if you’re not like the masses mentioned above or you just feel like hearing something a bit different for a change then I think you should give it a try. Who knows, you may just be surprised and find out that you like it more than you thought, skeptical or not.
